Effective mentoring is key in growing our translational science workforce. ICTS is leading an initiative at the University of Iowa to implement our new Iowa Mentoring Academy.
Goals of Iowa Mentoring Academy
- Provide resources for effective multidisciplinary mentoring for engaging in team science and conducting clinical trials
- Provide resources for scholars along the developmental pipeline to learn how to be mentored more effectively as well as how to mentor others
- Build a reward structure for successful research mentoring through a tiered recognition system
- Foster a campus climate that supports and values diversity in the workforce by providing training in diversity and inclusion in the context of a research group
- Build a cadre of trained National Research Mentoring Network (NRMN) facilitators campus wide
IMA mentor and mentee training programs are building on curricula that have been developed through the NIH funded NRMN, a nationwide consortium that was established in 2014 to develop and implement evidence-based mentorship and professional development programming.
The ICTS delivers mentor training via our MS TBM coursework as well as workshops designed for Junior and Senior Faculty on campus. Additional mentoring workshop opportunities are offered on campus via other trained facilitators and departments.
