Physical inactivity is a risk factor for several chronic diseases, especially among older adults. Conversely, engaging in regular physical activity reduces the risk for these chronic diseases and has been known to improve cognitive function, physical function and quality of life among older adults.
Yet, older adults are the least active age group.
Goal of pilot
This pilot project aims to develop low-cost, scalable and effective mobile-health interventions to increase activity in older adults. The interventions will be designed for older adults living in residential-living communities and then ideally transferred to other locations.
Project plan
Historically, interventions and projects similar to this have focused on younger populations due to the barriers reported by older adults; lack of safe environments, reluctance to exercise alone, financial constraints, lack of space.
This research team will utilize MapTrek, a University of Iowa designed interactive mobile-health intervention, to take away those barriers and provide an intervention that no longer depends on the use of a smartphone.
Collaboration with ICTS
The research team will utilize expertise from our Mobile Technology Lab and Engagement, Integration, and Implementation Core to engage with community members and use data and technology to complete their project.
